Genealogical research is never a one-size-fits-all process. Every family tree tells a story of its own. Sometimes it is a neatly wound skein, sometimes a hopelessly tangled one; slowly unravelling it reveals a world that no longer exists — a world that survives only within us, carried unknowingly through generations by those of us who suffer from a touch of ancestoritis.

Reconstructing a family tree is not an end in itself, nor is it simply a list of names, dates and places. It is about reconstructing history — not History with a capital H, the history of great events and famous figures, but history with a lowercase h: the history of ordinary people, the places they called home, and the times in which they lived.

That is the true fascination of genealogy.
