What information do I need to start a genealogical research project? I need a few basic details: the first name, surname, date and place of birth of your closest relatives who were born before 1924.

If you think your family is normal, you’re probably not a genealogist.

Can I create my own family tree? Of course! You may encounter some difficulties in certain cases, such as reading old documents. But remember… with patience, study and dedication, you can tackle almost anything! You’ll find all the information you need in my article "Le fonti per la ricerca genealogica in Trentino-Alto Adige: un quadro storico e archivistico delle principali risorse documentarie" in the Posts section (only Italian version).

genealogical research

How long does it take to create a family tree? It depends. There is no simple answer to this question. If your ancestors lived in the same place for generation after generation, the research will be relatively quick. On the other hand, if they moved frequently, sometimes over considerable distances, the research will take much longer. It also depends on how accurately parish priests kept their records over the years. Some registers contain a wealth of information, while others provide very little - or sometimes none at all. Ultimately, research tends to progress quickly when it's focused on a relatively small geographical area and useful information is readily available. Otherwise, it becomes more complex and considerably more time-consuming.
